The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild’s opportunity quilt is finally finished! I first started to work on this quilt last spring, by choosing the patterns to be used. Nancy Rink, of Nancy Rink Designs, donated a pattern that I liked for the pieced blocks, and I purchased the “My Whimsical Garden” pattern from Piece ‘O Cake Designs. Scott and I started with a trip to Debbie’s Fabrics in Tehachapi, for a little shopping. We spent 5 hours in the store that day, and Debbie ended up donating about half of the fabric we’d chosen! Her store is lovely, and it’s filled with colorful inspiration! After spending 2 full days washing, starching and pressing all the fabric, my friend, Eve, helped get me started with making kits for the applique blocks. I was completely overwhelmed by the huge pile of fabrics, and I think I’d still be stuck if it hadn’t been for Eve! All of the blocks were kitted and given to several members of our guild. Some of the ladies doing the applique’ had been involved in several of the previous years’ projects, and some had never participated in making an opportunity quilt. I think they all did a beautiful job! For the pieced blocks, I hosted a piecing party at my house one Saturday. We all had a great time, and we could finally see just how well the quilt was coming together. I’d originally chosen a fabric for the borders, but as the blocks came together, I could see that the original fabric wasn’t going to work. Carol saw a bit of fabric hanging on my chair and suggested we use it for the outside border, and it was perfect! I’d already decided on the polka dot fabric for the inner border, and Carol offered to do the Piping Hot Binding in the bright yellow. She’d learned how to do the narrow binding in a Susan Cleveland class. Carol also graciously agreed to put all three borders on the quilt for me, as I was running out of time. I was thrilled with how it looked after the borders were applied! Suzanne at Strawberry Patches donated the border and binding fabric, and I bought several of the fabrics used in the quilt top, at her shop. She’s just announced that she’s going to be moving the shop into a bigger space! She already has a fabulous shop, so it’s going to be over-the-top after the move! Jeri, owner of Bakersfield’s newest shop, Bolts to Bindings, also donated fabrics for the quilt top. Jeri and her crew are friendly and full of energy, and her shop is a blessed addition to our quilting community! Vicki, owner of Maricopa Quilt Company, donated the batting for the quilt. Her shop hosts several friendship groups on a regular basis, is stocked full of fabric, and Vicki does longarm quilting at the shop, too! The backing is a wide back batik from Sew Batik. I’d used their fabrics for longarming when I was selling longarm quilting machines, so I knew it’s what I wanted for our opportunity quilt. The quilt measures 85″ x 102″, and it was great not to have to seem the backing! It stitched up like butter, and the color is gorgeous! Sew Batik has several colors and patterns to choose from, and they just debuted their new home dec line. If you are interested in their products, they are available on their website or through me. Finally, the quilting was done by me. I had a ball coming up with all kinds of garden critters to hide in the quilting!
If you are interested in purchasing tickets for our opportunity quilt, they will be available after February 17th. You can contact me for details, or check our guild website at http://www.bakersfieldquiltguild.org. The winner of the quilt will be chosen at our quilt show next January.

What block pattern did you select? It is a beautiful quilt – very nice job.
The pattern for the blocks is called “My Jeweled Flower” by Nancy Rink Designs. It was very easy to piece, and as you can see, it created the chains that run through the quilt.
It turned out beautifully Lynn! I know what a huge job this was and you have done a terrific job. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your amazing quilt.
“MY” quilt is beautiful. You did such a wonderful job selecting the perfect fabrics, and your quilting is spot on. I can’t wait to win it and have it on my bed!
I think we are going to have to work on a visitation schedule! Then again, it would be on MY bed when I visit you!

Thank you for all of the wonderful, positive comments! This was a stressful, yet really fun, project! There were a total of 24 people involved in constructing the quilt, and everyone was great about working together for the benefit of our guild. It was a very good experience for all of us. I’m very proud of the end result, and I hope we set records for ticket sales!
